What should I look for when choosing an obstetrics doctor?

Throughout your pregnancy, your obstetrician will serve as a partner, providing the care you and your baby need to stay as healthy as possible. That means you want to choose someone with whom you feel comfortable so you can discuss any concerns or questions openly and without hesitation. It also means you want to choose a doctor who is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology so you feel confident in the care he or she provides. You also want to be sure the doctor has experience in high-risk pregnancies and deliveries so that if problems do develop, your doctor will know what to do. And finally, since you'll be visiting regularly, you'll also want to choose a doctor whose office is relatively nearby and easy to access.

Why do I need prenatal exams?

Prenatal exams serve two vitally important functions during your pregnancy: They help you take the steps you need to take to make sure you and your baby have the best of health throughout the pregnancy, and they also help your doctor identify potential problems right away so they can be addressed. Through regular blood work, belly exams, ultrasounds and other diagnostics, your obstetrics doctor will be able to keep track of your baby's development. The exam also allows the doctor an opportunity to listen to the baby's heartbeat and measure your belly to make sure the baby is growing properly.

During your pregnancy, she can also identify the need for testing that can help identify potential problems before birth. The decision fo whether to have the testing done is, of course, up to you.
